“Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould, but let God re-mould your minds from within...”
Romans 12:2

Unskeptical skeptics

Hilary Butler - Friday, November 20, 2009

Over the last few years, there has been an unprecedented attack on anything loosely described as “alternative” medicine, by those who call themselves skeptics.

A recent event amused me. An acquaintance of mine, who in the same breath says he’s a greenie who believes in science, also revealed he had cancer. He props up the pharma companies handsomely, but he can afford to.

Taking him at his word, I sent him a recent study in a very reputable oncology journal about the comparison between Iscador, which is made from the plant mistletoe, and a popular cancer drug. Iscador did comparatively as well as the drug without the side effects.

He refused to read it. After all, Iscador isn’t science. It’s a plant.

Don’t skeptics know that the medical professions drug armoury was founded on the very “quackery” of herbalism, that skeptics now revile?

Don’t skeptics know that when Herbalism was outlawed in the UK in the 20th century, the “ban” had to be lifted in World War 2 so that drug companies could get enough raw materials from the mere locals, in order to fill their inventories?

Having watched the skeptics movement in the last 20 years with great interest, it is my opinion that far from being honest skeptics, the definition of the world of most "skeptics", now means “instant dismissal". Skeptics appear to have simply taken over where the Spanish Inquisition left off.
